I have been a professional designer / maker in wood since 2004. One of the most rewarding experiences of being a professional is working collaboratively with clients from inception of the design to the finished furniture for their home or office.
The other side of my practice is designing and making items for galleries and exhibitions. This provides the opportunity to explore new designs and techniques.
The first interest I took in “fine woodwork” came from a visit to the Sydney Craft Show in the 1990’s. Thereafter I attended classes with some of Australia’s most accomplished designer/ makers before undertaking the one-year full time course at Sturt School for Wood in 2003.
I established my own practice in Rozelle in 2004 and became a committee member of the Woodworkers Association of NSW. With the help of Leon Sadubin, we organised a stand-alone exhibition, “Design + Wood”, in August 2007 to show case the work of accomplished designer makers. The exhibition was part of The Power House Museum’s annual “Design Week”.
A follow-up exhibition “Design + Wood 2009”, again with The Power House, was the staging point for a new professional association that subsequently became Studio Woodworkers Australia Ltd (SWA).
My design practice remains at Rozelle in Sydney and my workshop is now at Greenwell Point on the South Coast of NSW.
